Valentine's Deals, Discounts to Get Your Loved Ones

Goodbye January! I thought I would never say these words after the so-called 1000 days of January. But yeah, February is with us. You probably feel a sigh of relief as the turbulent tide of Njaanuary comes to an end and the month of love kicks off with a whole new urge for expenditure.

However, we also understand that even in the season of love, you are probably seeking to be prudent in your expenditure - as the entire world comes to terms with the high cost of living crisis.

Whether it is chocolate, flowers, candy, or the less traditional Valentine’s gifts like a piece of land, a home, or a car - everyone wants- and deserves a discounted sale.

Thus, our team at Money254 came up with a list of products and services that have Valentine’s discounts across various sectors - we are not exactly cupid, but throw in some gift ideas for your loved ideas.

Real Estate

Land is a highly valued commodity in Kenya. It was traditionally used by various local communities as the ultimate gesture of love and although the times may have changed, getting a free parcel of land still ranks among the strongest demonstrations of love from a Kenyan.

A number of companies have sought to revive this age-old gesture of love - with tailored discounts for Valentine’s Day. For example, Centum, the investment firm that built the Two Rivers Mall - has thoughtful discounts of up to Ksh1 million for those who gift their loved ones with a home.

Through its real-state arm, Centum Real Estate, the company has a Ksh1 million discount for luxurious duplexes in Runda - which are selling at Ksh45 million. The splendid units will definitely scream love given that each unit comes with a four-bedroom unit, a DSQ, and a swimming pool.

A similar discount has also been extended to clients who buy houses at Riverbank Apartments. The units are located within the company’s flagship project, Two Rivers Mall - along Limuru Road. There are one, two, and three-bedroom units - and prices start from ksh15 million, of course with a Ksh1 million discount during this season of love.

At the same Two Rivers development, there are 26 Mizizi Court Apartments going for Ksh4.2 million - a Ksh700,000 discount from the normal rate of Ksh4.9 million.

Username Limited, a leading real estate company that mainly deals with value-added parcels of land, also has giveaways as part of the Valentine’s Day celebration.

The company is offering a free Valentine’s Day dinner for clients who purchase their properties during this season of love. At the same time, the buyers will be listed in a promotional draw that will see the winning couples awarded with a fully paid-for romantic vacation to Mombasa and the Maasai Mara.

The real estate company is running a discounted sale to mark Valentine’s Day, which is also aligning with its tenth anniversary.

Under the theme “ten years of love”, the company is offering an extra plot of land for clients who invest in either Malindi or Elementaita where they have 50*100 plots. Thus, if you buy any of the plots at Ksh549,000, you get an extra plot in the other location.

For example, if you buy the plot in Elementaita, you get two titles - the extra one being in Malindi (The Almasi project). On top of that, the company is rewarding buyers with a Ksh10,000 gift voucher as part of the Valentine’s Day discount.

For Optiven, they are offering a cashback of Ksh6,000 for any customers who purchase any of their plots going for at least Ks379,000.

Travel and Hospitality

Travel has emerged as a more popular choice of expression of love - especially among millennials. According to Mastercard’s annual Love Index 2020, the number of transactions on hotels in Kenya rose by 65% from Valentine’s Day 2017 to Valentine's Day 2019 - against a 22%  increase worldwide.

Leading travel companies, hotels, and restaurants have likewise sought to incorporate this new clientele with unique discounts for Valentine’s Day 2023.

Expeditions Maasai Safaris, for example, has a rather unconventional offer where they are giving a two-night romantic getaway at the world-famous Mahali Mzuri Resort - deep in the Maasai Mara. The resort is owned by famous British billionaire Richard Branson.

For Ksh4 million per couple, the package includes private air transfers to the Mara, and accommodation in one of Branson’s 12 tented camps. In 2021, The Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards named Mahai Mzuri the world’s number one Safari Lodge and the best hotel in the world.

The package also includes a complimentary helicopter tour to the Cottars 1920 Camp for lunch on Valentine’s Day, a hot air balloon ride, breakfast and dinner in the bush, and guided game drives, among other indulgences.

It’s definitely one of the most expensive ways to say I love you - of course, made more affordable through the Valentine’s Day discount.

Serviced apartments have not been left behind as they seek to spoil clients with unique stays and treats.

For instance, Cysuites Serviced Apartments, located in Westlands, is running a Valentine’s Day package which includes a couple’s romantic, candle-lit dinner at Ksh3500 per person. Couples can also stay over at the apartment-style hotel at Ksh12,000 per night.

Emara Ole Sereni has a unique Valentine’s Day package that includes a pianist, welcome cocktails at their Acacia onwards. The package is going for Ksh7,200 per person.

The Nairobi Serena Hotel has three packages for Valentine’s lovers including Mandahari - at Ksh20,000 dinner per couple; Cafe Maghraib at Ksh16,000 per couple; and H&S at Ksh13,000 per couple.

E-Commerce

In Mastercard’s annual Love Index 2020, the sector where Kenyans registered the largest growth in expenditure was in e-commerce transactions which rose by 64% between Valentine’s Day 2017 and Valentine’s Day 2019.

As more Kenyans turn to e-commerce shopping, a number of service providers in the sectors have come up with targeted discount sales - particularly for items that make for common Valentine’s gifts.

Jumia, one of the leading-commerce sites, not only has generous discounts - but has dedicated pages for special gifts -based on prizes and gender.

There is a special section for both feminine and masculine gifts retailing for less than Ksh1,000. The listed gifts include a heart pendant, handbags, men's shirts, watches, etc.

There are also gifts going for below Ksh5,000 and include assorted whiskies, watches, sneakers, colognes, handbags, etc.

They also have another section for red-themed gifts including red wine, Bluetooth speakers, perfumes, and lingeries - ranging from Ksh800 to Ksh4,000. Most of the gifts have between 40-50% discount, ensuring you can show love without hurting your pocket.

Another example is Kitu Kali, an online e-commerce store mainly dealing with fashion products - which has a 10% discount on all purchases made during this period. The retailer also has a 20% discount for any two purchases.

Other Deals

Java House, the popular restaurant chain, has partnered with Oriel, where you share your love journey with their auto spare parts and stand to win a Ksh5,000 voucher to dine at any Java House restaurant.

Enkata Watches is also offering discounts for those who may wish to gift their loved ones with watches. The retailer has a 20% discount for any purchase of more than two watches. Thus, if you are buying two watches valued at Ksh10,000 - you will only pay Ksh8,000.

Denri Bags, a local manufacturer, has a running Valentine's sale with discounts of up to 50% on selected bags - particularly those that are most popularly used as gifts to loved ones.
