For the very first time, trainee teachers in public teacher training colleges (TTCs) will be eligible for Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans.
According to the Kenya University and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), 35 teacher training colleges across the country will benefit from this initiative.
Following the decision by the Ministry of Education to delegate the duty of placing TTC students to KUCCPs, the service now says all placed students will be eligible for HELB loans - a low-cost credit facility that has enabled thousands of Kenyan students to attain post-secondary qualifications.
Previously, TTC students were selected for admission to public primary TTCs by the Ministry of Education.
TTCs train students aiming to become primary school teachers through a 3-year Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and a Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE) for those intending to teach in the pre-primary level. Teachers who hold the previous P1 qualification can also upgrade to a diploma through a 9-month programme at a TTC.
