The Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) has announced plans to build a 42.5 megawatt (MW) solar power plant along the Seven Forks dams.
These dams are a key location for KenGen’s hydroelectric power generation. The new project is a step for the company and the country to increase the use of green energy.
The project is set to take two years and four months to complete. KenGen is partnering with the French Development Agency (AFD) to bring this project to life.
KenGen has said that the new solar power plant will help deliver more renewable energy to the national grid and address the challenges posed by climate change. The company also assures that the project will not only increase the amount of renewable energy but also make electricity more affordable and reliable for Kenyans.
"The additional power generated will boost our renewable energy capacity and protect Kenyans from the rising cost of power," said Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira.

He added that the project will provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy while creating job opportunities and encouraging community engagement through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
Wachira also praised the partnership between Kenya and France. "Kenya and France have enjoyed a strong and friendly relationship, and this cooperation continues to improve our energy infrastructure for the benefit of the people of Kenya," he said.
Bertrand Willocquet, AFD Country Director, highlighted the strategic benefits of the solar power plant. He explained that the solar power plant will work alongside the hydroelectric plants.
"The 42.5MW solar power plant will augment hydroelectricity production during the day and conserve water for power generation at night, especially during droughts," Willocquet explained.

He emphasized that France is committed to helping Kenya develop renewable energy, noting Kenya’s leadership in projects like the Olkaria Geothermal Field and the Seven Forks area.
KenGen Managing Director and CEO Peter Njenga confirmed the company’s commitment to increasing its renewable energy capacity.
"We are dedicated to scaling up our renewable energy by adding more electricity from clean sources. This will move Kenya towards a 100 percent green energy transition.
“We have made significant progress towards this goal, and our partnership with AFD has been crucial in achieving this milestone. We are now ready to develop our 42.5MW solar power project, adding more renewable energy to the national grid within 28 months." Njenga said.
