How Your MP, MCA, and Governor's Salary Will Increase This Month

Starting July 1, 2024, Governors, Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of County Assemblies (MCAs), are set to receive a substantial salary increase gazetted by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC).

The SRC's Gazette Notice outlines the new pay structure for various state officers, marking a notable rise in their earnings. The changes will see MPs, senators, governors, and county assembly members benefit from the financial year 2024/2025 adjustments.

Under the new salary structure, the Speakers of the National Assembly and Senate, Moses Wetangula and Amason Kingi, will receive a gross monthly salary of Ksh1,208,362, up from Ksh1,185,327. Their deputies' salaries will increase to Ksh966,690 from Ksh948,261.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei and Senate Deputy Speaker Kathuri Murungi will also benefit, now earning Ksh966,690, up from Ksh948,261.

The new salary structure increases the pay for the Leaders of the Majority and Minority parties, Kimani Ichung’wa and Opiyo Wandayi, to Ksh800,019 from Ksh784,768.

Members of Parliament and Senators will see their monthly salaries increase significantly to Ksh739,600 from Ksh 725,502.

This increment comes amidst rising living costs, a point of contention among the general public. Despite the backlash, the SRC has proceeded with the pay rise, emphasising the need to maintain competitive remuneration for state officers.

Governors will now earn Ksh1,056,000, up from Ksh924,000, while Members of the County Assemblies (MCAs) will see their pay rise to Ksh164,588 from Ksh144,375. The adjustments affect basic and market adjustment salaries, with house allowances unchanged.

National Assembly Clerk Samuel Njoroge defended Parliament, noting that the pay rise came from the SRC, which is independent, adding that the review was normal for all state officers.

“The changes are normal salary reviews or increments in any organisation. SRC made the adjustments last year and they were being actualized,” Njoroge said.

The SRC's decision underscores the ongoing debate about the balance between fair compensation for public service and the financial constraints of the nation.

Although the Gazette notices was introduced in 2023, the implementation comes amid calls for a national conversation on Kenya’s expenditure which has been criticised as allowing luxury for some state officers while ordinary taxpayers continue to be encouraged to tighten their belts.

President William Ruto on Sunday, June 30, promised Kenyans that there would be change in the government’s prioritisation and way of doing things in the coming days.
