The government, through the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, has announced there are over 5,000 bedsitters for sale on a rent-to-own basis at the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project in Nairobi. Buyers will pay Ksh3,000 monthly rent for 30 years.
Mukuru, which is the biggest affordable housing project, comprises 13,248 housing units in total, with bedsitters taking the bigger chunk at 5,616 units.
The bedsitters are nearly complete and are expected to be ready for occupation by December 2024.The government promised to give priority to Mukuru residents in the house allocation.

Benjamin Njenga, Secretary of Urban and Metropolitan Development at the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, reports that Phase I of the bedsitter project is 99%complete, Phase II is 80% complete, and Phase III is 60% complete.
“The President will start giving out the units starting December. We are targeting mainly Mukuru slum residents as we implement these key projects that are aimed at replacing slums across the country with decent housing units for the population,” Njenga said.
The other phases of the object will see the construction of 3,024 one bedroom units and 4,608 two bedroom units.

To get the houses, interested residents should apply through Boma Yangu at www.bomayangu.go.ke. One house per ID formula will be used as you can only get one affordable house with your identification card. One bedroomed houses will cost Ksh4,000 while two-bedroomed units will cost Ksh5,000 per month. All prices are exclusive of service charge.
Njenga stated that the State Department is utilizing the Housing Fund to accelerate the project, which has already created over 3,000 jobs for Kenyans. The Housing Fund is also critical in developing other affordable housing projects in other parts of the country including Shauri Moyo, Starehe and Soweto in Kibra.
The government aims to develop at least 200,000 homes each year to tackle the housing shortage in the country, where nearly 61 percent of urban households reside in slums.
