The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) plans to spend a total of Ksh394 billion over the next four years building new highways and repairing several roads that fall within its mandate.
This is according to the authority’s strategic plan for 2023-2027 which has concluded the public participation phase.
Among major highways that will take up a chunk of the 394 billion is the 462-kilometre Nairobi-Mombasa dual carriage, which will receive a budget of Ksh25 billion during the five-year period.
The project is expected to be undertaken in a public-private partnership and will receive its first funding in 2026.
The Rironi-Nakuru- Mau Summit highway will receive Ksh35 billion within the five-year period, with the first Ksh 5 billion being budgeted for the financial year starting 2025. The road will be build through a public-private partnership.
KeNHA’s strategic report shows that the government plans to make the final payment for dualling the 84-kilometre stretch from Sagana to Marwa in the current financial year (2023-2024).
The project started in 2020 and was funded by the government in partnership with the African Development Bank (AfDB). In November, a Chinese contractor paused construction for 3 weeks over a delay in disbursement of a Ksh900 million payment.
The strategic report shows that the Mau Mau road network which connects a number of Mt Kenya countries including Nyeri, Nyandarua, Murangá, and Kiambu will also be prioritised within five-year period. KeNHA indicated that the roads, alongside others in the Lake Victoria basin will improve access of agricultural inputs to market centres.
“Construction has also been prioritised for Mau Mau roads, Chemelil - Awasi – Katito, Sagana – Marua, Thika – Magumu, and Isebania - Kisii - Ahero roads that link agricultural zones to markets and source of farm inputs enhancing the agricultural value chain. The development of the Lake Victoria Ring roads will support the aquaculture, the food crop value chain and tourism,” the report reads in part.
