Former Kiambu County Governor William Kabogo has been vetted by the National Assembly pending approval to succeed Margaret Wambui as the cabinet secretary for the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
Kabogo, who has been in political cold - losing the county government seat consecutively in the 2017 and 2022 general elections - makes a return to cabinet in what many believe is a pact between President William Ruto and his predecessor Uhuru Kenyatta.
Appearing before the vetting committee on Tuesday, Kabogo, in adherence to leadership and transparency, was required to declare his wealth. The former lawmaker, if approved, is set to become the second richest member of the Cabinet - after Musalia Mudavadi who announced he was worth Ksh4 billion in 2022.
The flamboyant politician has on several occasions conceded he is a wealthy man and never shies off from flaunting his money.
In a 2020 interview with prominent media personality Anne Kiguta, Kabogo gave insight to the public on his vast wealth, citing three entrepreneurial adventures that made him millions.
Kabogo told Kenyans that he started making millions of shillings in the 1990s operating a car import business.
“In the 1990s, I used to import cars. Then you needed a license to import cars. I remember my last shipment of cars from Japan to here, was a whole vessel with 175 cars. So if you are making Ksh100,000 per car, how much is that? Big-time money," he shared.
The career politician dismissed allegations of plying in the illicit drug trade, adding that he was a major supplier to retailers in the country and among the founding members of the famous Eastleigh Market.
“I am the one who started the Eastleigh Market... Here I am, clean as snow,” he said.
Kabogo is also the proprietor of Iguta Paradise Homes located along Kiambu Road in Runda. The estate has 60 units of 4-bedroom villas, all of which have en-suite bedrooms, a master bedroom with a walk-in closet, a home office, and a private gym.
According to multiple realtors and commercial property listings, the houses sold for between Ksh40 million and Ksh42 million. At full occupancy, this translated to a payday of about Ksh2 billion for the former Kiambu governor.
On numerous occasions, the vocal leader has shared images of his lush properties, including sports bikes, cars, helicopters, real estate projects, land, and mansion, on social media—unafraid to showcase his vast wealth.
He was among the first politicians to buy a chopper, while vying for the Juja parliamentary seat, in 2002.
